Catherine Hill Bay has to be one of the most fascinating places on the Central Coast. It has a very distinct character, where history and natural beauty intertwine.
The first thing you’ll notice when arriving in the bay is the iconic coal loader that stands as a reminder of the town’s industrial past. This historic structure, jutting out into the ocean, once served as a vital link in the coal industry, where ships would dock to load coal mined from the nearby hills.
The coal loader is not just a relic of the past but also a popular spot for photography. It’s certainly one of my favourite spots, as its weathered timbers and rusted metal contrast beautifully with the blue sea, making it such a unique place to shoot.
Just offshore lies the wreck of the SS Wallarah, a coal-carrying ship that met its end in the bay. The remnants of the wreck can be seen from above and are sometimes visible from the shore, particularly during low tide, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue to the bay. This wreck is a poignant reminder of the town’s maritime history and the often perilous nature of life at sea.
Catherine Hill Bay isn’t just about history, though. The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The coastal walking tracks provide stunning views of the ocean, and the nearby Munmorah State Conservation Area is perfect for those who enjoy bushwalking or birdwatching.
