Werrikimbe National Park lies approximately 90 minutes south of Walcha, accessible via the Oxley Highway. Situated amidst the expansive Gondwana rainforest, stretching from Barrington in the south to the Border Ranges in the north, this park is a true natural wonder.
During our visit, we based ourselves at the Mooraback campground, a picturesque spot we highly recommend. From here, the Platypus Pools walking track embarks on a 6km loop along the headwaters of the Hastings River. As the name suggests, this track offers excellent chances to spot platypus in the deeper sections of the river. We were fortunate to observe four different platypi during our walk, a definite highlight of our trip.
Venturing deeper into the park via the Racecourse Trail 4WD track, we explored both the Brushy Mountain and Plateau Beech campgrounds. Both sites offer access to walking trails, including the remarkable King Fern walking track from the Plateau Beech campground. This short trail winds through the ancient Gondwana rainforest, leading to King Fern Falls and Filmy Fern Cascade. Additionally, we hiked the Loop Walking track from Brushy Mountain Campground, tracing a babbling brook amid towering gum and beech trees. While this trail was enchanting, we encountered some difficulty navigating sections due to fallen trees – a reminder of the rugged and less-travelled nature of these tracks.
For those hesitant to tackle the rough Racecourse Trail, the Platypus Pools walking track at Mooraback campground is not to be missed. This campground, one of the best we've experienced, offers a glorious walking experience amid stunning natural surroundings.
