One of the few locations blessed with not one but two lighthouses, Wollongong is a fantastic port city only 85 km south of Sydney. This coastal city combines the best of urban and natural landscapes, making it a perfect destination for a day trip or a longer stay.
The city’s twin lighthouses, located at Flagstaff Point and Breakwater, offer stunning views over the Pacific Ocean and the bustling harbor below. These historic structures are not just functional but also iconic, standing as proud sentinels over Wollongong’s beautiful coastline.
Wollongong’s beaches are another highlight, with stretches of golden sand and clear waters that are perfect for swimming, surfing, or just relaxing under the sun. North Beach and City Beach are popular spots, each with its own laid-back vibe and excellent facilities. The coastal walk that runs between them is a must-do, offering picturesque views of the ocean and plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery.
For those interested in a bit of culture, Wollongong has a thriving arts scene, with galleries, street art, and live performances regularly on offer. The city’s vibrant dining scene also doesn’t disappoint, with a wide range of cafes, restaurants, and bars serving up everything from fresh seafood to international cuisine.
If you’re up for a bit of adventure, the nearby escarpment offers fantastic bushwalking opportunities, with trails winding through lush rainforest and leading up to lookouts with panoramic views over the Illawarra region. We tackled the 18 km walk from Stanwell Park station to Austinmer via the escarpment. It was challenging but incredibly rewarding. However, be aware that some sections of the track might be temporarily closed due to ongoing upgrades. Once completed, these improvements will make an already amazing walk even better.
